SUMMARY:Langley’s Workforce Future: Local Business and Newcomer Talent (Women in Business)
DESCRIPTION:23% of Langley’s residents are immigrants and newcomers represent a critical component of our workforce and will play a critical role in addressing labour and skills shortages as immigration drives 90% of Canada’s labour force growth.   That said\, in a recent Langley survey\, only 48% of immigrant respondents were fully employed\, with just 19% working in their respective fields. \nWhile many of these new immigrants possess advanced educations\, work experience\, and language skills\, leaving behind their personal and professional networks can create significant challenges as they navigate their new lives in Langley.  Of course\, this under-utilization of talent has a negative impact on both the individual but also our broader economic potential. \nTo address these challenges\, the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce and the Langley Local Immigration Partnership are hosting a series of six events focused on exploring and tapping into Langley’s growing pool of immigrant talent. \nThrough a combination of presentations\, speakers\, panels\, and roundtable discussions\, these events will highlight local demographics\, provide insights into the current labour market\, and delve into the skills and experiences of Langley’s newest residents. The series will also tackle the obstacles internationally trained professionals face as they attempt to rebuild their professional networks\, establish contacts\, and re-enter the workforce. \nOur next session in this series will be July 16 and will focus on connecting women newcomers with local women in business\, exploring how to build networks and connections\, and discussing how to most successfully integrate newcomer women into our economy and community.

The B-Hired program is pleased to announce that our next session will begin on July 22\, 2024. \nMany of our past participants are currently working and building their futures in Canada. The B-Hired program is a free online Employability Skills and Job search Support program delivered in 5 phases:\n• Phase 1 – Employability Skills workshops providing 60 hours of crucial information leading to employment. Weekly meetings with the Case Manager will assist with resume development\, interview skills practice and coaching. \n• Phase 2 – short term Occupational Skills training leading to a certificate. The B-Hired program pays up to $600 for short term certificate training. \n• Phase 3 – Job Search Support is provided by our Employer Relations Specialists who provide job leads and connect job seekers to employers.\n• Phase 4 – Follow-Up is ongoing for the 12 weeks after a participant finds work or enters Substantive Education. \nThroughout the program individuals can receive a Participant Allowance for their active participation. $300 is paid with the completion of Employability Skills classes and completion of a certificate. $300 is issued once someone is hired or enrolls in Substantive Education. A Completion Bonus of $300 is issued once the participant completes probation or three months of ongoing education/training. \nThis online program is cohort based and in addition to providing a wealth of job search information and a path to employment\, it also offers a community for youth to develop their networking abilities\, practice their communication skills to build confidence\, reduces isolation by providing opportunities to develop friendships with others in similar circumstances\, and coaching and support from the B-Hired Team. \nOur next cohort starts in 5 weeks.
